January Newsletter 2010

Happy New Year!  Here’s hoping everyone had a great and safe holiday season.  January is one of our favorite months because it means that the outdoor shows begin and the 2010 season has officially started. What are your plans for 2010?  boundary waters canoeingWe have already accomplished a few of our New Year resolutions. For instance, we have secured a cabin on Burntside Lake which we will be offering to all our clients for the night before and after their trips.  The cabin is located 15 minutes north of town and is located just off the echo trail, one of the main routes into the Boundary Waters. It also is one of the premier fishing lakes in the area.  We also upgraded our show display to enhance the presentation and include photos of many of our client’s trips from the past few years.  In anticipation for a busy season, we are in the process of hiring another guide.  This season has 20% of our trips booked but there are still many quality slots remaining. We are really looking forward to this season, last year we caught more trophies and quality fish than in any of the previous years and we expect this year to be better yet.

When a new season begins it is very special to me… you see I am in the wilderness pretty much from late May to the middle of October and many people ask, “don’t you get tired of all the hard work?  Are you sick of seeing the same areas and catching all those fish?!”  Well as all of our clients already know… the answer is “NO!” I love this area and it is the passion of my life and nothing pleases me more than sharing this area with others. Honestly, I get excited on every single trip.

On every trip, with every twist and turn of a river and every peek around each new point, you reveal something new…it could be a beaver, a moose or an eagle perched on a limb scanning the lake for its next victim. Or it can be as simple as a boulder field or a beautiful downfall tree that you know will hold some monster fish! I have had many clients who have traveled and fished  all over the world.  Every time I bring someone who has had a massive amount of outdoor experience they are shocked by the MAJESTIC BEAUTY, wildlife and great fishing that the Boundary Waters has to offer.

So let us share this with you…its time…book that trip that you’ll remember for the rest of your life! There is no better time than now!

Excerpt from the July 2009 newsletter - Don’s trip

boundary waters fishingOn the 5th day we made our way over to the Lower Basswood Falls area in hopes for one of the great campsites in the area where with some luck we will catch some fish. We were not disappointed. When we got to one of my favorite campsites with a view of two waterfalls dropping into Crooked Lake, Don says that it is hard not to appreciate the beauty of this area and that he now wished he had brought a camera.

We set up camp and hit an area where I did well before. With water 3 feet higher, the landscape had changed a lot. We caught numerous Northerns but were not satisfied. We headed back to camp but not before we fished below the falls. We caught a few more and head back to camp. We have a big meal and hit the sack to the sound of the waterfalls pouring into the lake.

On our 6th and last day of fishing before we made the trek out, I wanted to make sure we caught some fish. We talked strategy and decided to hit the shoreline just as we did before. It didn’t take long before we realized that we are in for a very special day of fishing by the time the day was over, we will have caught between 70 - 80 high quality fish all on top water. When we were down to the last bay, the last piece of structure, the last cast… Don threw a pop’r and caught a 19” Smallie. That’s how we wanted to finish our trip so we put the rods away and paddle back to camp. Don is now convinced that this is the best fishery in the U.S. and the best Smallie fishery in the world- and of course I agree. As we sit around the campfire we go over the events of the past week and Don tells me that he is completely satisfied and that he is impressed with the quality of the fish and the voracity of their bite.

On our 7th and last day of travel, we are on the water by 6:30 AM. We made it out in 5 ½ hours. When we make it to the final portage we meet a group of women that are impressed with our portaging efficiency. We were portage machines. As we arrive in Ely we had lunch and Don said something that got me a little choked up. He told me that he has lead a very full life but that in his later years his adventuring style has waned. He said that this trip to the Boundary Waters had awakened something in him that he needed. Then he tells me he is surprised to admit that I am as good or better fishermen than he is…I thought that was funny because I was thinking the same about him. Don taught me lot… some things about fishing and some things about life. Thank you Don.

Moose & Deer

boundary waters moose swimming

This vegetarian group is a common sight in the canoe country. The moose is a majestic sight to be had, bulls weighing in excess of 1500 pounds. The white-tailed deer is best known for its large white tail which is raised in alarm as a flag as it runs from danger. At one time, the woodland caribou also roamed this area. Plans are underway to reintroduce the caribou to the area. Shallow bays and rivers holding underwater vegetation are the places to view moose. In early summer, cow moose will keep their young calves near the water. As you paddle, watch the shoreline for deer as they come to the water’s edge for a drink
