newsletter

The 2008 season is over and we are already getting ready for 2009! Over the last few weeks I have had time to go over the 2008 season and I have to say that it was the greatest!  We would like to thank all our clients.  We didn’t have one complaining client or slacker.  Everybody did their job.  Everybody was a trooper and you all relished the adventure like one should.  I feel very lucky… and best of all, I feel as though I made a few friends over this past season.

Every trip had its own special quality moments.  If it wasn’t the fishing, the wildlife or the beautiful plant life, it was the weather balloon we found or the monstrous Northerns yanking fish off our stringers… or when we paddled within 30 yards of a bull moose and those Eagles plucking fish right before our eyes.  And we can‘t forget the Wolf packs howling off in the distance.  As I sit writing this newsletter, I can’t help but imagine what wonders will happen next year. You would think that after a long season I would be glad to have a break but I am more enthusiastic than ever.

In the off season, our monthly newsletters will contain information on new routes, history of the area and upcoming events in the Ely area as well as information for the 2009 season with details of our three upcoming shows.

History lesson

North American Indians are responsible for creating the more well-known version of the canoe - a frame of wooden ribs covered with the lightweight bark of birch trees, and sometimes elm or cedar trees. These boats, which have remained virtually unchanged in design for thousands of years, proved to be ideal for traveling the numerous streams, rivers and lakes of North America.
Birch bark was the perfect choice to build canoes because not only was it lightweight and smooth, but it was also waterproof and resilient. The joints of the canoes were held together by the root of the white pine and then made waterproof by applying hot pine or spruce resin.
As the commerce of early North America grew, so did the need for canoes. The fur trade became so large, in fact, that the French set up the world's first known canoe factory at Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, around the year 1750. Many of the canoes that fur traders used were capable of carrying a crew of up to 12 people and a cargo weighing around 5280 pounds.

2009 Fishing/ Sport Shows

Look forward to seeing you all again soon.

Lately, I have had time to go over the 3,000+ photos from all the clients and my own camera so there will be plenty of new photos in the monthly slideshow. After going through them all I can’t believe all the talented photographers out there! Check it out…
